MINECRAFT DESIGNING FOR ACCESSIBILITY
Our world is made up of a diverse group of people with a wide range of abilities. Moving through our communities and public spaces might be difficult for some people. That's why we're ecstatic to reveal a new universe in Minecraft: Education Edition that can assist us in shaping our own!
BuildAbility is a non-profit organization that focuses on accessibility and creating inclusive environments. The five categories of accessibility barriers will be discussed first: Attitudinal Barriers, Information or Communication Barriers, Organizational or Systemic Barriers, Physical Barriers, and Technological Barriers.
They'll then visit several community places in Minecraft: Education Edition, where they'll encounter a variety of characters who represent the many people in our world who experience accessibility challenges. Students will be asked to build and re-build areas in order to make them more accessible to everyone.
BuildAbility helps students by stimulating greater critical thinking, investigation, and analysis of accessibility hurdles as they are explored in Minecraft. Learners will employ inclusive design thinking and problem solving founded on empathy and social emotional learning as they identify hurdles in-game.
Collaborating with students and educators
The Peel District School Board (PDSB) in Ontario, Canada, worked with Microsoft to create v. PDSB students and teachers have begun adopting Minecraft as a tool for engaging learning activities in their classrooms. We were ecstatic to receive the input and expertise of a group of educators who were supportive of the Minecraft world's development. We heard directly from PDSB students about the methods they travel through their own schools and communities, as well as the difficulties they face, to ensure we were reflecting the actual realities of people who face accessibility barriers. BuildAbility has incorporated these experiences.
We're excited to work with Microsoft on BuildAbility, an accessible learning tool for beginners "Peel District School Board Superintendent Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Rusulan Q Hoppie stated. "PDSB is committed to removing as many barriers as possible for people with disabilities and establishing an inclusive learning and working environment for our students, staff, and communities through our Multi-Year Accessibility Plan. This project shows how serious we are about our commitment. Our goal is to teach students and educators about the obstacles that people with disabilities encounter, as well as how they may advocate for and support them.
Extending your education into the real world
BuildAbility's mission is to inspire children to think about how their world is designed with or without accessibility in mind. Students can explore three separate settings in BuildAbility: a school, a retail mall, and a community corner featuring a gas station and store. In addition, the globe has an open sandbox area where educators can present unique build challenges centred on inclusive design. Students can apply what they've learned in the classroom to real-life situations by recognising barriers in their local schools and communities and proposing new approaches to create more inclusive environments.
The globe comes with an Educator Guide that includes guided lessons and resources for educators to help learning about accessibility hurdles, as well as discussion prompts and inquiry questions regarding accessibility and inclusion. Though the Educator Guide outlines some of the barriers found within BuildAbility, we know there are many more visible and invisible hurdles based on personal experience.
